......on
the occasion of the 1st Anniversary of the KKSD/ACPA / Association
of Cyprus Paper Artists
By
Heidi Trautmann
…in
the end all is well and the exhibition is ready,” said Ismet Tatar, one of the
founding members of KKSD when we stood in the exhibition hall waiting for the
first guests. It was around 3 o’clock, the two halls with the works by 32
artists looked exciting and fresh and the screen for the lectures was set up,
microphone and loudspeakers, and I thought, how right Ismet is, working
together in a large group is a fine thing; the members of the Association of
Cyprus Paper Artists have done everything to make the association’s first
birthday a success. Threads of communication have been established to other
artists of IAPMA celebrating their 30th anniversary and many
postcards from its members around the world with artistic birthday wishes have
come in and were attached to a traditional wishing tree in the middle of the
hall I, so touching.
I
have already done some introduction with my announcement of this event with
links to more information; here it is again for those who have not read it.

Artists,
students and their teachers flocked in to listen to the very interesting slideshow
lectures by
Prof. Dr. Hakan
Pehlivan (President, KSD) with Prof. Dr. Nur Gökbulut:
“The Art of
Cutting Paper”.
The history of paper cutting, ‘Scherenschnitt’ ‘silhouette cutting’ and where
we stand today. Wonderful images.
Daniela
Todorova, (Curator and Art Consultant to
the Amateras Foundation, Bulgaria):
“Innovations in Paper Art, Contemporary Forms”. An interesting
retrospective of the last Biennale in Sofia and a look into the future; she
expressed her sincere invitation to the young artists of Cyprus to put in their
applications for participation.
Todor Todorov,
(President and founder member of the Amateras Foundation):
“Elemental
Sculpture, Theory and Practice”. Here we learnt about sculpting in the
wider sense connected with nature with the four elements: fire, water, air and
earth, and its aspects in architecture and landscape architecture…
…….after
Inci Kansu, the President of the Association has formerly greeted the guests
and given some information on history and aims of our young association and
paper art in general.
The
response of the audience was very positive, for many non-initiated a new
approach to art and one could see and hear their reflection of how they could
make use of all the information. From
the samples that were shown we could conclude that the idea of paper art in its
pure form and in its far and high reaching experimental philosophy has since
long been taken up by artists in many countries of the world, also by some of
the founder members of the Association of Cyprus Paper Artists, here especially
Inci Kansu having been a paper making and paper artist for over 25 years now. She
and her colleagues Ismet Tatar, Emel Samioglu and Simge Uygur have participated
in many international paper art events around the globe. Paper Art has an
established influence in all fields of the arts, reaching into music, theatre,
fashion and architecture. In many ways nature is a firm component of this
philosophy.
I
overheard many comments of acceptance by the young audience but also from the
older generation; one art teacher said: “I want my students to get away from
purely digital art, I want them to work with their hands, create their own
tools and material, it would inspire them afresh and they would get to know the
values of things and of nature.” Requests from art departments and individuals
alike came forward for participation in workshops to learn more about it.
It
is the whole meaning of paper making and paper art, isn’t it? To get involved with your entire personality,
to touch, to learn, to get to know the secrets of nature by using plants of
your environment to make paper and to make art with it.
It
is part of the basic knowledge of survival.
My best anniversary wishes, may the association reach all the high goals they have set themselves.....
