‘Beyond Seaside’ -  A Journey to the Fantastic World of the Unknown

There is always a place for us where we want to seek refuge in when we don’t agree with reality. That is the material our dreams are made of when we sleep and find ourselves in a country where we can unload the hardness of our life. Around this theme Anna’ new work are about and in her introduction and thoughts about the new exhibition we get the following explanation:

“The unfamiliar as a stimulus and source of inspiration is at the heart of the new works by Anna Kakoulli. Fact and fiction intertwine within her illustrated settings in a way that make it possible for her to penetrate into the sensitive zone between familiar and unfamiliar. These are places to escape to from the present that have emerged out of relationships with others, but also with herself.”

Anna Kakoulli was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. From 1983-1990 she studied at the Moscow Academy of Fine Arts ΄Surikof΄. She graduated with a Masters degree in Painting and Monumental Painting. To date she has had seven solo exhibitions in Cyprus, two in Athens, in Finland and in New York. She has had three exhibitions with Rüja Reşat, a Turkish Cypriot painter, in Nicosia, Limassol and Brussels. She has also participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus, Greece and France.

I have met Anna Kakoulli through Rüya Resat who died so very young. They did a lot together. Also, Anna and I took part in a TV interview set up by ‘Deutsche Welle’ to talk about art in the two parts of Cyprus.

The opening of her exhibition is on Monday, 31 March 2014 and will be open to the public until April 15.
