What is Pulya? Pulya is a bird the meat of which is said to be very tasty. Already in the Middle Ages the birds were caught and delivered to bird-eaters in Italy; now, that it is nearly extinct, we make a festival to honour it or to celebrate the memory of it.

This is what I found out when I visited the festival last year. I had not expected the festival to be so big with thousands of people coming from all over the island, also many foreign tourists enjoying one of the many Döner Kebabs and other traditional dishes. For the young people enough fun was offered, a Giant Wheel and this electrified go cart thing I still remember from my childhood.

Again this year, stands and activities will crowd around the cultural exhibition hall and the Amphitheatre. There will be a photo exhibition, I remember last year, we saw old wedding photos which was quite fun. There will again be a several day Caricature Workshop with our local masters of cartoon and some invited international ones, and whoever wants to know how a cartoonist sees you with his eyes,  then you must go there and have you drawn by one of them. At the end of the festival gold, silver and bronze pulyas will be awarded for the best submissions. See here with my text some cartoons of last year’s winners.

There will be concerts in the amphitheatre and sports activities aplenty in the area. Look for the festival programme.
