News Flash from Sidestreets

11 December 2009

Sidestreets Director Johann Pillai’s poster designs were awarded the joint first prize and honorable mention in an art competition held to promote and highlight the importance of Human Rights Day (10 December) in Cyprus.

The competition was an initiative of two non-governmental organizations: KISA (Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism) and the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation, supported by the Embassy of the Netherlands.

The entries (in the 12-18 and 18+ age groups) were judged by a 7-member awards committee chaired by Garo Keyehan, the director of the Pharos Trust, and comprising representatives from both communities and people of various ethnic backgrounds.

The winning entries as well as a selection of the best artwork submitted were exhibited at an award ceremony organized by the Dutch Embassy at the Goethe Institute on the evening of December 10th, International Human Rights Day.

Unfortunately I have not seen the results of the art competition myself, so I am very grateful to Johann Pillai to let us know about it.

I have admired the series of Sidestreets posters for a long time. I will report on them in a separate review. Heidi
