October and November - Sidestreets – New Film Programs
10/27/2009

PRESS RELEASE

Sidestreets is pleased to announce the start of two new film programs for October and November.

Over the last two years, in addition to offering cultural education programs for children, organizing arts exhibitions and events, and offering quality English courses, Sidestreets has presented a wide range of film events to the public, as part of its mission to promote critical engagement with culture and the arts as well as social responsibility in our society.

As one of its community initiatives, for example, Sidestreets has been screening free films for children living in the inner city of Nicosia every Saturday since October 2007; these are attended by 15-50 children every week. Some of Sidestreets’ other film events have promoted cultural heritage awareness (the world premiere of “The Stones of Famagusta,” the screening of a film taken by the Swedish Archeological Expedition to Cyprus during 1927-31); and social awareness (the workshop “Conversations on Film” which brought together film-makers from all over Cyprus, the screening of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” as part of the European Green Week Events coordinated by Sidestreets, the screening of Derviş Zaim’s documentary on Cyprus, “Parallel Lives”). Sidestreets’ first two Art Film Series featured the films of Ingmar Bergman (February-March,  2009) and Derviş Zaim (March-April); in May an enthusiastic audience enjoyed an evening of Experimental Short Films by such directors as Man Ray, Hans Richter, David Lynch, Peter Greenaway and Özgür Özcan.
