April 12 - 22 - Cyprus Art for Peace - organised by EMAA at the EMAA Art Centre
4/8/2010

You are cordially invited to the opening of the Cyprus Art for Peace Exhibition in Nicosia, organized by the European Mediterranean Art Association (EMAA) under the auspices of the United Nations Good Offices.

The Cyprus Art for Peace Exhibition is made possible by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot artists who have been contributing works of art to the UN Good Offices exhibition since May 2009. These works of art have engaged, challenged and inspired the Leaders during the ongoing negotiations to solve the Cyprus question.

The Exhibition will be inaugurated on Monday, 12 April 2010, at 7.30 p.m. by                    Mrs. Oya Talat in Nicosia at the EMAA Art Center (the old Turkish Municipality Building).

CYPRUS ART FOR PEACE EXHIBITION TO OPEN TO PUBLIC

The Cyprus peace talks have been the setting of a rolling exhibition of works by Cypriot artists for nearly a year.  As of Monday, 12 April, the general public will have the opportunity to view a selection of  these works, brought together as the “Cyprus Art for Peace” exhibition, at the European Mediterranean Art Association (EMAA) Art Center in Nicosia.  Mrs. Oya Talat will inaugurate the exhibition.

The original  paintings, sculptures, photographs and mixed media installations– over 100 from more than 40 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot artists -- first went on show at the United Nations Good Offices mission, the site of the negotiations between the Cyprus leaders, in May 2009.  The Special Adviser of the Secretary General, Alexander Downer, hosted the exhibition.

Mr. Downer has called the works “a small indication of the tremendous potential of this island”.  “I am heartened by the collaborative nature of the exhibition, which is conceived and led by Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot artists”, he said last May.

One aim of the exhibition has been to “accompany and engage the Leaders during the ongoing negotiations to solve the Cyprus question”, said Ozgul Ezgin, one of the organizers of the exhibition.

The artists participating in the exhibition are: Gonen Atakol, Ruzen Atakan, Katerina Attalides, Lia Boyiatzi, Andreas Charalambous, Mathaios Christou, Emin Cizenel, Gunay Guzelgun, Nilgun Guney, Pola Hadjipapa, Inci Kansu, Eser kececi, Osman Keten, Ashik Mene, Anastasios Modites, Guner Pir, Anber Onar, Zehra Sonya, Ozden Selenge, Gokce Sekeroglou, Ismet Tatar, Daphne Trimikliniotes, Hambis Tsaggaris, Ioanna Voskou.

For editors:  Mrs. Talat will inaugurate the exhibition at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, 12 April.

The Cyprus Art for Peace exhibition is made possible by the artists who contributed their works in support of the peace process and is held under the auspices of the United Nations Good Offices.
