The
small Art Gallery at Rüstem’s Bookstore in the Old City of Nicosia is custom
made for this kind of exhibitions, just perfect, an inspiring place and I am
sure they will surprise us in many ways in the future.
The
exhibits featured in the gallery are from private collections, paintings, sketches,
signed prints, exhibition posters and catalogues with important names of modern
Western art such as Chagall, Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Guillaume Cousteau,
Abidin Dino, Jean Metzinger and Rodin.
It
was a cooperation of Arucad and Rüstem, with dear Oya Silbery and Halil Duranay
curating the event and the exhibition was planned to be open until 28 August
but, as I spoke to Halil, they might consider to leave it open for another week
as so many people have shown interest to see the exhibition. The enormous heat
of over 40°C of the last weeks has made many people avoid going into the City
of Nicosia during the day. So please contact them before you plan to go.

The
exhibition brings back memories for me personally because with these artists
and their works, their philosophy, I grew up.
Collecting
art was very common in those days for people travelling in and to Europe; it
was considered a duty to send the young folk to Europe for educational purposes
with France and Italy, also Germany being the favourite countries, as the arts
in those days of the artists mentioned here, underwent a great change,
aggressive and following new ways of executing and understanding art.
