Karl und Heidi Trautmann haben ihren Traum verwirklicht, in ihrer Freizeit ein Segelboot gebaut, ihre Jobs an den Nagel gehängt und die Leinen gelöst. Heute ist die Early Bird ihr Zuhause, das östliche Mittelmeer ihre Heimat, der Hafen von Girne im türkischen Teil Zyperns ihr Ankerplatz.
Eine Reise entlang der Geschichte und der Küsten Griechenlands, der Türkei, Syriens, Libanons, Israels und Ägyptens, von der Planung eines Segelabenteuers auf bayerischem Festland zu einem neuen Leben in zypriotischen Gewässern.

Prologue
Close the door when you go
It is early autumn in Upper Bavaria. In my hand I am holding the key of the house, play with it as if there were still something to remember. The car is packed full with the last cartons for the boat. The house is empty with a hollow sound. Dry leaves rustle at my feet in the open glass gate blown in by the wind. Motionless, and my eyes are directed to the outside and beyond that while I feel the strong bond of the house in my back, in my heart. When I cross this threshold now, I will close a very important section of my life, like turning a page. A gentle breeze over the garden in the glow of the afternoon sun, our small paradise full with country flowers and roses. Our home for so many years does not belong to us anymore, we have exchanged it for a new life, a dream. Now I turn around and put the key in the lock, for the last time I see that big room through the glass and myself reflected with the garden in my back. I tear myself away, box my fists into the pockets of my jacket and hurry off to my car waiting and I am impatient to get away and I cut the bonds, like an opening to an exhibition, you may come in and take part.
